On 7-March-08  Giovanni Hearne , Simon Connell were invited to make a presentation on SR applications geared towards the needs of Element-6 programs involving advanced and strong-hard materials.  This was entitled  “Shedding Light on the Behavior of Strong Materials by using Synchrotron Radiation Techniques”.  Input materials for this presentation was contributed by Connell , Hearne and Doyle (a South African based at the ELETTRA synchrotron in Trieste-Italy ).  Presentation content included , introduction to SR and overview of research applications, high P-T applications pertinent to strong-hard materials, surface science applications.  Various project needs of E-6 that would profit from SR applications were accordingly identified.

We are planning the Science-at-Synchrotron conference (S-at-S-II), this is the follow-up to the first successful conference held at iThemba labs (Cape) in Feb-2007.  We hope to realise this in the first quarter of 2009 with the assistance of Ithemba Labs (Gauteng).  At this stage we can near-confirm that this series of meetings will be held at the DST convention facilities of their Pretoria-East campus. There is a need to co-ordinate this amongst our key contributors from the ESRF-Grenoble and SOLEIL-Paris Synchrotrons, other contributors from Europe and the USA.    We are in the process of making contact with those friends and contributors.

On 7-March-08  Giovanni Hearne , Simon Connell were invited to make a presentation on SR applications geared towards the needs of Element-6 programs involving advanced and strong-hard materials.  This was entitled  “Shedding Light on the Behavior of Strong Materials by using Synchrotron Radiation Techniques”.  Input materials for this presentation was contributed by Connell , Hearne and Doyle (a South African based at the ELETTRA synchrotron in Trieste-Italy ).  Presentation content included , introduction to SR and overview of research applications, high P-T applications pertinent to strong-hard materials, surface science applications.  Various project needs of E-6 that would profit from SR applications were accordingly identified.
 
An  advanced School on Synchrotron and Free-electron Light Sources and its multi-disciplinary Applications” was held at the AS-ICTP in Trieste-Italy for the first three weeks of April this year.  This was attended by three emerging young SA scientists,  Neil Jackson (WITS) , Esna Du Plessis of (Sasol Technology) and Christopher Bongani Mtshali (iThemba Labs). The program of lectures and events at the School may be found at our website, http://psi.phys.wits.ac.za/wiki/Synchrotron/Synchrotron.  The School was geared toward post-graduate students and post-doctoral level scientists , mainly from developing countries.  Besides many varied and interesting lectures involving SR applications cutting across various disciplines and presented by leading scientists in their fields, the attendees participated in  a number of practical sessions at the ELETTRA synchrotron in proximity to Trieste.  The SA delegates returned home very enthused about SR research possibilities for their research work.

We are planning the Science-at-Synchrotron conference (S-at-S-II), this is the follow-up to the first successful conference held at iThemba labs (Cape) in Feb-2007.  We hope to realise this in the first quarter of 2009 with the assistance of Ithemba Labs (Gauteng).  At this stage we can near-confirm that this series of meetings will be held at the DST convention facilities of their Pretoria-East campus. There is a need to co-ordinate this amongst our key contributors from the ESRF-Grenoble and SOLEIL-Paris Synchrotrons, other contributors from Europe and the USA.    We are in the process of making contact with those friends and contributors.
